prices up to an all-time high in california. innen effort to ease the burden, governor brown took emergency action today. kimberly tere has more on that an it seems you found one of the cheapest places for gas in the area. >> reporter: at this gas station on mcgee and north 33rd, you can see for yourself, the price for a gallon of regular unleaded is 4.37. 31 cents less than the state average but most say it isn't a bargain. >> i'm not working so i'm looking for the cheapest gas. >> looks like she found it. it has been busy all day with drivers looking to save at the pump. >> i try to get it where it is the cheapest and this is the area to come. >> reporter: worth the wait? >> i can say it is. >> reporter: governor jerry brown is now stepping in an unprecedented move aimed at

driving down gas prices, brown directed the california air resources board to alu the production of less expensive winter blend of gas. >> winter blend is essentially a similar type of gasoline that doesn't have to meet as stringent air pollution requirements. with summer months, cleaner version is necessary to reduce ozone when possible. winter gasoline, thanks to the cooler air, doesn't have to be quite as stringent. >> usually the switch doesn't happen for another few weeks but by doing it now the theory is the fuel supply will increase and prices will decrease. right now the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in the bay area is 4.66. that's almost a dollar more than the national average. while industry experts say the governor's move is an interesting gesture, it won't have a massive impact. they say they expect to see prices drop in the next few days any way. since the problems at refineries that caused wholesale gas prices

mother likely died sometime between 7 and 10:00 p.m. friday night and say she suffered a traumatic injury to her head. we have more on the investigation. >> she was definitely a person who saw ways she could contribute and didn't hesitate. >> she was a lovely. everyone knows that. great mom. great teacher. some of the parents of the students wanted her to be the parent. >> reporter: standing on this porch of a friend's home in hercules, three of susie's four children remember their mother. describing a loving, giving woman who was thrilled to be a new grandmother the family home is surround by crime tape. they say someone killed her inside. a neighborhood found her body on friday. >> very shocking. i found out first thing on saturday morning. she had passed friday but my phone had died. as soon as i turned on the phone

friday it shifts in to southern california and showers moving with it well to the south of santa cruz by the end of the week tomorrow, partly cloudy skies. not a lot in the way of showers except up to lake county and northern coastal range. in to tuesday afternoon, watch the hills here. around the santa cruz mountains 3:00 in the afternoon on tuesday. then wednesday afternoon, as the low starts to cross the coast we get more moisture moving in. right there south of san jose, the mountains diablo ring south if that is where the low goes in to southern california, mainly south of san francisco will have the best chance of showers. you can see not a bay area wide event but toward the hill tops and south of san jose. temperatures in the 40s and 50s. cool start to tomorrow morning and might be light jacket weather for the afternoon. highs near 70s in san jose. low to mid-70s around the

that vote. in san jose a sml group of protesters set up in front of city hall to mark the one-year anniversary of occupy san jose. the 28-hour camp started at noon on saturday and ended around noon today. they say what appears to be dwindling interest, occupiers have been active in promoting the rights of the 99% and fighting the abuses of the financial industry. >> the number of individuals engaged in occupy may be less than a year ago. however, the skop of our actions, and the focus is much sharper than initially. >> the scene in san jose was in stark contrast to a protest in san francisco where police say several people brought out hammers, ice picks, flares and bags of rocks. san francisco's big weekend is just about officially over. everything appears to have gone relatively smoothly from the blue angels to the giants, the niners the castro street fair and the music festival.

tonight. they distributed a steroid used for back pain that is connected to a meningitis outbreak. 91 people have been infected and seven have died from the rare illness. officials say the steroid could have been injected in thousands of patients. what was supposed to be the dream day for two couples turned in to a nightmare. a brawl broke out at a high-end hotel in philadelphia. it was all caught on tape. >> reporter: a wedding gone wild at a philadelphia hotel. guests of two wedding parties going at it in the lobty of the sheraton this morning. at the midst of a chaotic scene a woman in a white dress is knocked to the ground. that's the voice of 15-year-old max shulgs, a hotel guest that took the video and posted it on-line. >> it just started punching each other and hitting each other and the police came in and started

clubbing people. >> reporter: loud screams as police can be seen and one man thrown down by an officer. police say they were outnumbered. at one point at least 75 people were involved in the alcohol-fuelled brawl that started in the bar and spilled in the the lobby. several people were hurt and one man died of a heart attack. a 57-year-old believed to be the uncle of the bride. the sheraton released a statement saying they were cooperating with the ongoing police investigation and offered heart felt condolences to the family. >> the sheraton couldn't do much. it was out of their hands. too many people. >> reporter: police made three arrest and more could follow after what should have been a beautiful night turned very ugly. nbc news. all right. we will check in with rob on the weather. it was a beautiful day in the bay area. what can we expect for the week? >> the week ahead will start to see changes. the area of low pressure which we thought would stay off shore

most of the weekend, but over the next two to three days it will approach the coast bringing changes our way. and most of the changes late tuesday in to wednesday as the low crosses the central california coast in to southern california. taking any chances of showers with it very likely late thursday in to friday in to southern california. so in terms of the chances seeing showers monday doesn't look like a lot. north of sonoma county may have a shower or two. the mountains seeing more moisture come in and wednesday as the low loss crosses the central coast is when the most lift and the most moisture will be coming in. by wednesday afternoon, maybe the diablo range. for south of san jose right now if the low scoots to the south it will be the south bay hill tops the see the showers middle of the week. stronger sea breeze will drop the numbers down. 40s and 50s out.

we should reach the low 70s in the trivalley. south of san jose low 70s tomorrow not as warm as mid to upper 70s for the big weekend we just went through. now you notice tuesday in to wednesday scattered showers mainly for the hill tops and a cool start to the week. you will notice in to thursday and friday the temperatures are staying down. like clock work like it was planned by next weekend the numbers should rebound some. mid-70s back by next week weekend and the showers. breezy but nice weekend in store once we get through the few showers. >> chilly the middle of the week. when we come back we will take you on a special boat ride for a story that will make you bay area proud.

there are people who served the country but don't always get to enjoy all that it offers. one east bay woman makes sure at least one day of the year they do. we have the story in tonight's bay area proud. >> we have boats, too. there's another one. >> it is the last saturday in september. the day of the annual wheelchair regatta at the yacht club in alameda. >> sign if if you would. >> at the helm, as always is margo brown. >> so they have more room to maneuver. >> reporter: if she is to make this year's event, margo must be organized. thorough. and decisive. >> we need him here now. >> reporter: it must be said the fact there is such an event every year is thanks to another of margo's qualities.

>> i'm stubborn. if i start something, i am going to continue to do it as long as it is physically possible. >> reporter: so far it has been physically possible for 16 years. this year's regatta, the biggest one yet. close to 300 veterans are coming from homes and facilities all over california. margo has 100 volunteers to greet the veterans, escort them to the docks. >> how many wheelchairs can you safely accommodate? >> one by one wheelchair and all place them gently on to some 30 different yachts. the skipper of each boat offering to take their honored guest on a tour of the bay. >> that was a fun ride. >> reporter: for some of these veterans it will be their only

outing all year. >> it's a gift. a gift well received believe me. well received. until our dying day we will remember these things. >> reporter: though she has no great family ties to the military, margo says she offers this opportunity to the vets because she feels they are often forgotten. particularly for those, like her, who have a history that goes back more than a few decades. >> look at what they have done for us. they have risked their lives. they went when we didn't. >> reporter: this yearly event is simply one american's way of saying thank you for your service. the thank yous margo received this year echoed ones she heard many years ago. it's the one reason margo's calendar is already full for the last saturday of next september. >> one of them turned to me and

half moon bay is gearing up for the pumpkin weigh off. it is video from last year's winner. one broke the record weighing in at 1,704 pounds. that's a large weird-looking pumpkin. here's a look at the contenders. growers had incentive to go beyond the record because safeway is offering $25,000 prize for the world's first one ton pumpkin.

one ton is of course 2,000 pounds. even if no one breaks the 2,000 pound mark, there are hefty prizes for first through tenth place. the weigh off starts tomorrow morning at half moon bay. the winners will be on display at the pumpkin festival next weekend and there's traffic going there, too. >> always interesting to see how they get that over at half moon bay. >> absolutely crazy. thank you for watching nbc bay area news. the chris matthews show is up next. have a good night.
